📚 Reading Comprehension

Read a short story, then answer the questions. Pick your grade and a story to begin!

About reading comprehension practice

Reading comprehension is the ability to understand and think about what you read — not just sound out the words, but know what they mean together. This free tool gives children a short story to read, then asks questions about it, from simple "what happened" questions to ones that ask them to think a little deeper and write their own answer.

How it helps young readers

The passages get a little longer and more challenging at each grade level, from three-sentence stories in kindergarten to full paragraphs in second grade. Multiple-choice questions give instant feedback so children learn right away, while the short-answer questions encourage them to explain their thinking in their own words. There's also a read-aloud button for early readers who need a little help. For more practice, try our printable reading worksheets or the interactive Sight Words tool.
